Panhandle Bandshell

A performance stage built entirely with repurposed, recycled materials

The Panhandle Bandshell is a full-scale performance stage constructed almost entirely out of reclaimed and repurposed materials, including 65 automobile hoods, hundreds of computer circuit boards, 3,000 plastic water bottles, French doors, reclaimed wood, and recycled structural steel. As a fully modular structure, it can easily be dismantled, moved and re-assembled anywhere.
From June 23 to September 3, 2007, it was installed in San Francisco’s Panhandle Park, where it was open for both impomptu and scheduled performances. The bandshell was dismantled on September 14th, 2007 and moved to Treasure Island for winter storage. In the summer of 2009, it started a new life at a second location at San Francisco’s Fort Mason Center, where it played host to countless performances and gatherings over the course of the next year and a half. It is currently in storage again–awaiting installation at its final home. For inquiries about permanent siting of the Bandshell, contact holler [at] rebargroup.org.

Portal of Awareness by Rojkind Arquitectos

Rojkind Arquitectos have designed the “Portal of Awareness” installation in Mexico City. The designers were commissioned by the coffee brand Nescafé to use 1,500 coffee mugs to create the public installation.

Public Farm One/ work AC

PF1 (Public Farm One) is an urban farm concept built with inexpensive and sustainable materials recyclable after its use at P.S.1, such as cardboard tubes that form a continuous surface creating multiple zones of activity including swings, fans, sound effects, innovative seating areas, and a refreshing pool at its center, as an Urban Beach.

The Rake Showroom Is Another Green Architecture Design Made From Recycled Materials

An architectural design is considered green according to various reasons and in the case of The Rake Showroom; it is because designers of it get majority of its materials from a nearby building subject for demolition. Items reused in this project include two layers of reused doors for the walls and three layers for the ceiling

The Safmarine Container Classroom Will Provide A Comfortable And Eco-friendly Place To Learn For Kids At Vissershok


Recycling used containers has been known to many environmentalist for quite some time now and its popularity has grown bigger with the Safmarine Container Classroom as one of the proofs. This structure is an eco-friendly container classroom sponsored by Woolworths, Safmarine, and AfriSam. It is made of 12m container, recycled and turned into a classroom. Pupils who will benefit the said structure are Grade R pupils of Vissershok Primary School. These pupil are aged 5-6 and are children of those farm workers and those underprivileged communities near the Du Noon Township.

The container classroom project is built with a limited budget and so it is designed to maximize space but with the important elements including the learning areas, gathering area, play area, and the growing area.

Baxel Pavillion: A Beer Crate StructureSchool

Does Eco-friendly architecture design becoming a trend or designers are really into saving the environment? More and more designers and student designers are now into eco-friendly design and this include the students from the University of Applied Science in Detmold, Germany who had just recently designed the Boxel pavilion. This hailed as eco-friendly pavilion is made out of 2,000 beer crates. As part of the students’ course, they are required to develop structures from computer modeling to construction; the Boxel Pavilion is made that resulted into being the coolest music venue in the campus. You might wonder why this structure is hailed eco-friendly, it is because, the beer crates are recycled old beer crates donated by a local brewery.

Packed: Digitally Designed Eco-friendly Cardboard Pavilion

We all know that cardboard is an eco-friendly source of materials. You do a lot of things from cardboard and this include furniture pieces, art pieces, home decors, and even architecture. The packed cardboard pavilion is one of the great examples. Designed by students from ETH Zurich, Switzerland, Packed is the output of Min-Chieh, Dominik Zausinger, and Michele Leidi. With the help of the modern imaging software, the Packed was digitally designed. Cardboard cylinders of different sizes were connected together and the Packed cardboard pavilion was formed. How the cardboard were sourced can be a question, but what matters most is that it will decompose easily.
